A Plea For Understanding...

Could anyone thinking of approaching other contributors "off line" via Personal Messages or emails please note that they are probably not alone in doing this, resulting in the in-boxes of our resident "experts" getting full to overflowing because they simply haven't got the time (or often the energy) to respond - either at all or certainly not in the detail required to give a satisfactory answer.
Posting direct to a blog entry is fine, that's what the comments text box is there for, but it's the PMs and emails (if a member includes it in their profile) that are the problem.
Jeremy's situation is unique amongst the mods because his blog and his instinct to help makes him a natural target. If you have a query specific to your own situation, then post it in open forum because the mods - aware that his position has become "difficult-to-untenable" - have advised Jeremy that all off-line approaches to him on matters of general interest to the readership at large are best ignored and deleted from his system.
So please keep it in open forum.

Don't assume we want to see it either!

It'd be nice if there was.
Right now I'm enjoying the peace from only having PM notifications for conversations that have been around for a time. Quite why people join this forum and then never post, but just PM members with questions is beyond me. I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said I'd answered the same, or similar, questions 20 or 30 times by PM, when a forum post would have not only allowed a better range of answers, but would also have enabled an answer to be found by just searching.
The search facility on this forum (and others) isn't always that great, but most search engines seem to support site specific searches, so typing something like this into a search engine:
Should very quickly find all posts here with the search terms passive and slab. It's usually very much quicker than the forum search engine, plus it allows the use of boolean search modifiers, so unwanted terms can be excluded by adding them to the search with the "-"prefix, essential terms can be included by using the "+"prefix etc.

I now have an "ebuild search" bookmark for the "site:www.ebuild.co.uk" trick, but once again it would be good if this could be activated via the forum search button or some text displayed on the null result page.

Apparently you have a full box.

Maybe gaining pm rights after 10 posts would be a good idea, and also ( if straightforward ) make the first post allowed only in the "introduce yourself" section, where folk can give they're status / interest / reason for joining the forum. ?
Don't know if that's do-able though.
