And can VAT be recalimed on scaffold?

It can if youre a VAT reg company and are hiring them in to provide you a service, but not if you're a self builder

3.4.2 Goods on hire
Goods hired on their own are always standard-rated. Examples include the hire of:
- plant and machinery (although plant hired with an operator can be zero-rated where all the conditions in sub-paragraph 3.1.2 are met)
- scaffolding, formwork or false work (although the service of erecting or dismantling can be zero-rated where all the conditions in sub-paragraph 3.1.2 are met)
- security fencing, and
- mobile offices

Oh, and when you inevitably cut tubes, dump them in the skip, don't let the scaffolder find them on site, it makes them sad.

My scaff quote started at £10k for 6 weeks and as I played two off against each other it quickly fell to £4.3k for 8 weeks (Berkshire so expected to pay a bit of a premium).
Also no VAT applied, however I paid by bank transfer and was properly invoiced.
Agree to retain some payment until they've cleared the site - I found out that they like to use sites as free storage.

45 linear meters , 2 stories and tables for the gables. Design had a few cut ins and projections that complicated it a bit.
