Around £26k, does that sound reasonable?

My last groundworks job was smaller than that but from cheapest to dearest, the variation was £5K on a job that was only £10K.
I went with the cheapest and they were very good.

I've found generally that going for the cheapest quote may not always be best. As an example, our landscaping work is going to be done by the bloke with the highest day rate I know, but he's got the job because he does an extremely good job, has a lot of his own plant and he works like a demon, doing perhaps 50% more in a day than others I've had on site.
One thing I did with some trades was start off with a small job to see what they were like, with the promise of more work in future. This certainly sifted out a couple that were seriously dodgy, and also worked as an "in" to a network of good contractors. Once you've found, as we did, say, a good brickie, then the chances are that that good brickie will know, and recommend, other people he knows in other trades if you ask. You're not likely to get a duff recommendation this way, as the person giving you the recommendation is putting his/her own reputation on the line by making it. It's a system that worked really well for us, a good brickie put us on to an excellent plasterer, for example.
