Is A Leak Fixed With Some Mastic Going To Last?

I am concerned that there will be leaks in the future as things were not done properly in he first place. Am I being over concerned or is this use of mastic/silicon pretty standard stuff in the plumbing world?

If it dries and smells of vinegar he's bodged it with silicon and it will leak..!

If it's still 'wet' and greasy after a day in the open air then it is, if it goes off like a rubber band then it's silicone and you should hunt him for his fur.

I still use what's left of a very old pot of Water Hawk potable water jointing compound for the very few times I get a problem.
