Members' Product / Service Recommendations.

Am I looking in the wrong place, do relatively few members actually build, or is promotion of stuff discouraged, or what?

We do get a fair few spammers trying to use the forum just to advertise their own product, often quite sneakily, and we try and discourage and eliminate them if we can, but we still want to see companies and tradespeople share experiences, so we have to be cautious about who we view as an outright advertiser.
I've named some of our suppliers for our build and been quite honest when they've had shortcomings, but I've stopped short of mentioning the very few who have been bad by name. All I do with the tiny minority of bad suppliers is contact anyone here who's thinking of using them offline and advise them as to our experience, as we don't really want the forum turning into a place where grievances get thrashed out in public (especially if it places the forum owner in a difficult legal position).
We're just coming to the end of a passive house build, using an EPS raft foundation system, a prefabricated timber panel frame system and triple glazing, MVHR etc. It's been a very steep learning curve at times, and despite a year or so of deep research before we started there are a few things I'd do differently if starting again (like less heating and better cooling). The whole story is in my blog on this forum, here: http://www.ebuild.co...t-mill-orchard/ (the oldest entry is at the bottom, newest at the top).

js - I have read most of your blog - I'm up to about 28, although I haven't yet opened most of the attachments - and it has been very useful. Maybe I'll just come across other recommendations as I go, but in the early stages of planning, i.e. getting a sketch budget together, it would be useful to be able to ask recommended suppliers for quotes. To save me searching your blog again, what EPS raft system did you use?

The EPS raft suppliers I spoke to offered to either supply the foam components only (meaning you have to get an SE to do the structural design, buy the steel, do the layout, install the system, steel fabric, DPM and concrete) or a design and supply package where they provide an SE signed off design and they supply the foam plus the specification for the steel and concrete. You still have to lay the foam, get the DPM, steel, concrete etc and make sure the resulting slab is absolutely mm perfect for the frame company.
The rough budget for the "budget passive build" package we used is around £370 to £420 per m² of total house internal floor area, and included the foundation slab, frame, insulation, under floor heating pipes, internal walls, floors etc and the airtightness layer (with air test certificate) and battened and membrane clad roof to keep the rain out. It didn't include windows, doors, plasterboard, internal services, tiles or slates, external cladding or internal joinery.
