Hi...
Not a self-build, but looking to replace knackered roof. Getting very mixed opinions from roofers regarding the quality and longevity of the different alternatives to slate. (Roof is currently slate and trying to work out if worth stretching my budget...)

For Eternit, I've been told they'll need replacing after 10 years and that they will last for over 30. (Common problems apparently include nesting birds and crumbling?) For Marley the range different roofers quote is generally longer, but not much.

So, can anyone give any impartial advice on the expected lifespan of a Marley tile roof and an Eternit roof?

Cheers!

This American site has lifetime data on slate, artificial slate, wood shingles etc etc...See table. Not sure if the data is valid for the UK though..

This site says Marley Eternit guarantee the colour for 20 years and that "All colour guarantees are in addition to the existing 30-year durability guarantees"

eternit type roof coverings should give you 30 years at least.

Hi.

Why do you feel the need to change from slate ? Stick with the best product for your building and im sure it will be a wise investment.

Hi...
Thanks for your input everyone...
I've no particular desire to change from slate - was just wondering whether one or two apparently outlandish claims as to the longevity of eternit-type coverings had any basis in people's experience.
Slate it is, I think.

Thanks again
