Hi 1st post so be gentle with me. We are waiting for costings on Oak doors, skirtings architraves, door casings and window boards - our carpenter has had bad experiences with oak and we woundered if anyone out there can put our minds at rest. The Oak company dry kilns the oak so eliminating the need to dry it our for weeks, but we are worried if we use oak casings - would the moisture from the plaster affect the wood?

Perhaps use a mix of solid and Oak veneered mdf? I believe you can even get mdf with a 6mm layer of oak for stairs etc. Looks good.

Consider Osma hard wax oil for the finish.

PS I saw some good value oak doors at the new B&Q Peterborough (of all places) the other week. Looked better than I expected close up. Two styles available.

Thanks Cwatters, someone mentioned Sweet Chestnut today, said you couldn't tell the difference from Oak - thought it may be an idea to use that for the casings. Any comments??

I'm not really an expert on wood. I think I would ask over on this forum...

http://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/

We have oak flooring, white painted frames architrave and skirting except in dining room where we have oak skirting. Our doors are in Cerejeira from JB Kind.

Cerejeira looks nice when Hardwax oiled but it's a more uniform even grain than oak. No knots.
