New Statesman magazine asked some "thinktanks" what advice they have for Gorden Brown. Demos, which has been quite close to Noo Labour suggests:

"Corporate volume housebuilding is failing. Instead of zero carbon, we get zero choice, low standards and not nearly enough. To raise environmental and design standards and speed up planning we to need bring people’s producer power back in. Target: one-third of new properties to be self-build by households or communities."

Can't see it happening myself due to vested interests but wouldn't it be great if it did happen.

Indeed, not without some form of land nationalisation...and we'll just get a load of nimby responses to a field full of "wacky" houses. No hippies in my back yard...people are now so negative in this country. Banning the Daily Mail would be a good start...did you see that Melanie Whatsit on question time...denying global warming ffs.

I turned off QT as soon as I saw her on the panel - and I consider myself right of centre!

And *even if* global warming is a load of old tosh, it still makes sense to pursue alternative energy and energy conservation in order to preserve conventional fuel supplies, reduce pollution and increase energy security.
